House of Earth, by Woody Guthrie and The Jungle by Upton Sinclair have a powerful view of the United States’ claim for freedom. Guthrie and Sinclair present different situations because the works were written in different time periods, but the similarities between the characters, conditions and consequences of living in the United States are significant. In these novels, the main characters experience different journeys, but they endure the hope and disappointment that leads them to recognize that their dreams, which the stereotype of the American dream has shaped, are unreachable because of systemic restrictions. Guthrie and Sinclair use their works to show us that the United States lacks the freedom it claims to have by presenting Tike†¦show more content†¦They were no more than hardworking renters, now. That was the lowest Tike had ever been but he had not reached the rock bottom of the farming industry, so the hope of owning land was still there. Therefore, when a government brochure, for the farming population, presented the idea of a safe, sanitary, and inexpensive house of earth, the dream of building this house was formed. The house of earth brochure included instructions on how to build it and the fact that it was â€Å"free material. Just take a lot of labor an’ backbendin’† (13) was an advantage for Tike because of his background as a working man. But that dream was taken away from Tike when he went to the bank to renew his lease and was denied. Tike told Ella May, â€Å"He said that the only way he’d let us live on it was, ahh, on the shares† (66). Sharecropping was the lowest of lows to Tike. He prided himself on being a hardworking man and making a living. However, sharecropping became lower than rock bottom because Ella May grew up being wealthy and Tike wanted to give her everything he could. At this point in his life, the freedom that this country claims to have was never something Tike was able to experience, and he felt guilty that he was preventing Ella May from ever experiencing it again. However, Ella May was the voice of hope and the voice of reality. At the end of the book, her true spirit comes

Essay on The Wise Ruling and the Unwise Seeking Consent of...

The Wise Ruling and the Unwise Seeking Consent of the Masses The most difficult thing for a regime to achieve is that of acquiring the best ruler, with the consent of the ruled. Aristotle acknowledges this in his works The Politics, and Caius Marcius Coriolanus faces this difficult task in the Shakespeare play The Tragedy of Coriolanus. We even see this same difficult task arise in contemporary politics, as the masses are wooed one way or the other with sound bites, and talk show appearances, by candidates who may not be the best leader for the republic. To this day I dont know if there is a real solution for this dilemma. There is, however, a better way to go about seeking the consent of the ruled then the route Coriolanus†¦show more content†¦He believes that a man without a city is either a beast or a god, since man is not self-sufficient. All partnerships aim at some good. The polis, being a multitude of partnerships, also aims at good. Good, the activity of the soul in conformity with virtue is possible because of the partnerships existing between the citizens of the city. This idea can be a dilemma for any regime, even our own. The key is for two things to occur: 1) the soul must rule the body. 2) Reason must rule over a well-ordered soul. A soul, Aristotle believes is made up of three parts: logos, thymos, and eros. Each part possesses a virtue necessary for justice to rule the soul. This will occur if each virtue minds its own business. Logos is the element of the soul that separates us from the animals. It controls rationality, speech, and reason. An animal can be taught to do many tricks, but an animal cannot be taught to contemplate complex philosophical ideas or quantitative physics equations. Logos must allow wisdom to govern. Thymos is the part of the soul that gives man his will to do the right thing and stand up for what is right. It must be governed by courage. Thymos, in its correct sense is facing danger the way it should be faced. William Shakespeare s Much Ado About Nothing - 957 Words

In William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, the course of Claudio and Hero’s relationship is the most troubled and the most realistic. While there are obvious feelings between the two characters, just like in real life, obstacles arise that shape the play’s events and their relationship. The problems that occur through the course of the play can be blamed on Don John’s actions and can also be attributed to Claudio’s tendency to be easily swayed. Eventually the issues are settled and Hero ends up with Claudio. After Claudio returns from battle, he realizes that he is deeply in love with Hero and quickly informs Benedick that he intends to marry her. Claudio says, â€Å"In mine eye, she is the sweetest lady that ever I looked on†Ã¢â‚¬ ¦show more content†¦She, like Claudio, falls in love rapidly and is prepared to marry him based on first impressions. She knows little to nothing about his character, but somehow sees a future with him. Hero and Claudio begin their relationship young and naà ¯ve but grow together by first growing apart. Don John and Borachio easily trick Claudio into believing that both Don Pedro and Hero are disloyal to him. While the matter of Don Pedro’s loyalty is quickly resolved, the more problematic subject is Claudio’s belief that Hero is unfaithful. Claudio seems awfully insecure and it is his insecurity that can be attributed to his easily persuaded mind. The question arises; why did Claudio not confront someone else about Hero’s supposed unfaithfulness? While he thinks that he has proof of her disloyalty, one would think that if he truly loved her and knew the quality of the young woman she was, then would he not seek further proof of her infidelity and not publicly shame her before he knew the absolute truth? Also, why does Claudio fall for another trick of Don John’s? Claudio easily believes Don John because he really knows very little about Hero’s c haracter. If Claudio truly loved and trusted Hero, then he would not have fallen for Don John’s trickery and would have recognized his villainy. While Hero and Claudio’s relationship begins with the shallowness of physical attraction, making their love affair the most realistic of the play. While there are bumps along

The lender uses credit, income, employment, debt as well as asset which the prospective borrower provides as a basis of his view or trust. on Toni Morrisons Beloved The Supernatura Essay Example For Students

on Toni Morrisons Beloved The Supernatura Essay l Toni Morrison Beloved EssaysSupernatural in Beloved Elements of the supernatural pervade Toni Morrisons novel, Beloved. These elements include evidence of African-American folklore and tradition in the everyday lives of the inhabitants of 124 Bluestone Road. Beloveds character is another obvious use of the supernatural: shes a ghost for part of the novel and a ghost-in-the-flesh for the major part of the book. In Beloved, Morrison extracts African folklore from history in order to enrich the authenticity of an account of the lives of ex-slaves during the late 19th century. Her extractions include medicinal, religious, and superstitious components from African life. As doctors were not available to most blacks during this time slave or free they were forced to depend upon their intuitive nature and upbringing. For instance, spiderweb is used as first aid for cuts, while grease is spread liberally over these same cuts as a long-term ointment of sorts. For slaves, church was simply another segregated part of life which forced them to develop their own way of practicing their faith. African roots are very visible in Baby Suggs sermons in the Clearing. White men go to church, sit down in wooden pews, and settle in for a lengthy dissertation on their sins. On the other hand, Baby Suggs calls her people into Nature to dance, cry, and finally, to laugh. Her version of a sermon is actually an outpouring of the vast contents of her heart. Superstitions are a natural part of any cultures make-up. However, some superstitions are firmly rooted in one specific culture. This is evident in Baby Suggs statement to Sethe where she says, Not a house in the country aint packed to its rafters with some dead negros grief (Morrison 5). Similarly, Ella comments to Stamp Paid, You know as well as I do that people who die bad dont stay in the ground (188). Morrisons style embodies an additional aspect of African philosophy. According to John S. Mbiti, it emphasizes that the spiritual universe is a unit with the physical, and that these two intermingle and dovetail into each other so much that it is not easy, or even necessary, at times to draw distinctions or separate them (Samuels 138). One can see how Morrison fits this definition with her constant interweaving of the spiritual world along with the physical world. Stereotypical thinking says that a fine line exists between the spiritual world and the natural world. Elements from either world might show up in the other, but, like oil and water, they never quite mix together. Morrison breaks these stereotypes by mixing her elements completely together in the character of Beloved. Morrison provides the reader with a transition between the two worlds. First, she introduces Beloved the ghost as just that a ghost, obviously still part of the spiritual world. She then weaves this spiritual part into the real world by manifesting Beloved into a seemingly live person. However, Morrison reaffirms the old standards by implying that while the two worlds appear to be meshed perfectly on the surface, deep down they are in total chaos. This idea is emphasized when Beloved concentrates on holding herself together. She dreads the day (implied as being inevitable) when pieces of her would drop maybe one at a time, maybe all at once (133). Mysticism and magic saturate Beloved. The roots of these elements come from experiences during slavery, which in turn, take their meanings from African culture. In the novel, examples of this influence can be found in medicine, religion, and superstition. Mysticism and magic are furthermore exemplified by the character of Beloved. .ufcb312977b8bca56538793133140b672 , .ufcb312977b8bca56538793133140b672 .postImageUrl , .ufcb312977b8bca56538793133140b672 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ufcb312977b8bca56538793133140b672 , .ufcb312977b8bca56538793133140b672:hover , .ufcb312977b8bca56538793133140b672:visited , .ufcb312977b8bca56538793133140b672:active { border:0!important; } .ufcb312977b8bca56538793133140b672 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ufcb312977b8bca56538793133140b672 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit- transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ufcb312977b8bca56538793133140b672:active , .ufcb312977b8bca56538793133140b672:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ufcb312977b8bca56538793133140b672 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative; } .ufcb312977b8bca56538793133140b672 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ufcb312977b8bca56538793133140b672 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ufcb312977b8bca56538793133140b672 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(ht tps://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ufcb312977b8bca56538793133140b672:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ufcb312977b8bca56538793133140b672 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left: 18px; top: 0; } .ufcb312977b8bca56538793133140b672 .ufcb312977b8bca56538793133140b672-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ufcb312977b8bca56538793133140b672:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: NOHO arts district Essay
